The secret to Weight Loss 🤫
Jan 22, 2025The Secret to Weight Loss (IMO)
Today I was happily munching on a chocolate and banana muffin. It was fluffy, chocolatey perfection and man alive I enjoyed every bite; anyway I had this thought: If the secret to weight loss was a muffin, we’d all be winning.
But here’s the thing: there’s no big, life-altering "secret" to weight loss. (Sorry if you were hoping for some muffin magic.) What there is, however, are four key principles—my 4 Pillars of Weight Loss—that will help you not just succeed, but thrive. And since I’m all about sharing, let’s dive in.
Pillar 1: Nutrition - it's not all boiled chicken, zero sugar and cutting out alcohol.
You can’t out-train a bad diet. It’s a saying for a reason, but let’s get one thing straight: "good nutrition" does not mean surviving on kale smoothies and boiled chicken. Who has time for that?
Nutrition is about understanding calories, portion control, and how food works for you, not against you. It’s also about keeping the foods you love on the menu. (Yes, that includes muffins.) No food should ever feel "off-limits." Instead, it’s about making small tweaks that fit into your life without making you miserable.
When you ditch the mindset of restriction and focus on balance, it’s a game-changer. Eating should be enjoyable—not a punishment.
Pillar 2: Habits - oh so easy to create but hard to break. Work with them rather than against them
Weight loss isn’t about willpower—it’s about habits. Habits are like those sneaky background apps on your phone: some are helpful, and some just drain your battery.
Do you snack mindlessly while scrolling Instagram? (We’ve all been there.) Forget to eat until 3 PM and then devour half the kitchen? These little behaviors add up. The good news? So do better habits.
Small, consistent changes—like prepping a balanced lunch or swapping sugary drinks for water—can make a massive difference over time. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s progress.
Pillar 3: Mindset - the good, the bad and the ugly. Your thoughts play a huge part on success.
Ah, mindset—the unspoken MVP of weight loss. Let’s talk about those little voices in your head. You know the ones:
"You ate a cookie, so you may as well eat the whole pack."
"You missed a workout—what’s the point of even trying?"
Sound familiar? That’s self-sabotage talking, and it’s time to shut it down.
Here’s the thing: how you talk to yourself matters. That negative voice—the one that loves to criticize and tell you you’re failing? It’s loud, but it’s not helpful. Instead, try listening for the practical, positive voice. The one that says, "Okay, you had a cookie. Big deal. Let’s move on and make the next choice a good one."
A strong mindset isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about learning to challenge that negative chatter and replace it with something constructive. Talk to yourself like you would a friend: with patience, kindness, and a little tough love when needed. Over time, this shift in self-talk can make all the difference.
And remember: progress isn’t linear. Some days will be easier than others, and that’s okay. The key is to keep moving forward, one small step at a time.
Pillar 4: Body - Sleep - whats that again? Selfcare - who is she? Stress - is my BFF! But it all plays a huge part.
Here’s a fun fact: you don’t need exercise to lose weight. But here’s another: moving your body makes everything feel better—weight loss included.
Sleep, self-care, and managing stress are just as crucial as any workout. When you’re rested and feeling good, it’s easier to make better choices. And when it comes to exercise, find what you love. Whether it’s a dance class, a walk with the kids, or finally nailing that TikTok yoga challenge, movement should feel like a reward, not a chore.
Also, let’s not forget hormones (especially for us mums). Your body goes through a lot, and understanding how things like sleep, periods, and stress affect you can be a game-changer.
