Postnatal Depression & loneliness; all new mum's nemesis!
Dec 06, 2023Postnatal Depression; all new mum's nemesis!
Welcoming a new life into the world is undoubtedly a momentous occasion, but for many mothers, the postnatal period can be a challenging journey marked by a profound sense of loneliness and, in some cases, postnatal depression.
I know all too well the excitement that comes with being a new mum; to have a little bundle coming into your life is a feeling and anticipation like no other.
Then when baby arrives you are thrown into a world that does not come with a manual or rule book. Just lots of second guessing and googling at 2am answers to questions you never thought you needed to know.
Like "what colour should my baby’s poo be?" and "should I wake my baby at 3am?" - the answer is no! Never wake a baby!
But this new world also brings with it an unprecedented loneliness and feeling of constant questioning and doubt.
You can find that after the initial rush of visitors and family members wanting cuddles; it can be really, really, lonely.
Loneliness and Postnatal Depression; a partnership not made in heaven.
Research has shown a strong link, among many, between loneliness and postnatal depression.
Loneliness is a complex emotion that can affect anyone, but for new mothers, it can become more pronounced during the postnatal period. The isolation that often accompanies caring for a newborn, coupled with changes in routine and lifestyle, can create a breeding ground for loneliness.
This emotional and exhausted state that comes with motherhood, if left unaddressed, can pave the way for postnatal depression, a condition that affects not only your mental health but also your ability to care for and bond with baby.
Again, I speak from firsthand experience.
Postnatal depression, new mum anxiety and overwhelm is far too common!
Before I type any further you may wonder what makes me qualified to write such an article on postnatal depression and loneliness?
I’ll tell you now nothing in terms of a medical degree or certificates.
But that I have worked with hundreds and hundreds of new mums and that I too have had 3 babies and with all I have found myself within the grips of postnatal depression more times than I care to remember.
I have sunk to the bottom of that dark scary barrel.
I have also experienced antenatal depression, which is far less spoken about, and I think a lot of mums-to-be are ashamed to talk about.
My very first time as a new mum I found that those I once felt I had a life in common with suddenly a world away from me complaining of exhaustion because they stayed up watching Netflix, not with a screaming baby at 2am.
This new world of motherhood comes with a new base line normal. Exhaustion, messy hair and winging it.
This emotional and exhausted state that comes with motherhood, if left unaddressed, can pave the way for postnatal depression, a condition that affects not only the mother's mental health but also her ability to care for and bond with her child.
You may sometimes feel like you are failing and that you are alone in your feelings but let me assure you, finding your tribe will help you realise that you are not alone and you are not failing.
You are nailing it, this is normal and you have nothing to worry about.

The Healing Power of Exercise:
It has long been recognised that exercise is a natural remedy for mental health issues, and postnatal depression is no exception.
Physical activity releases endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators, helping combat the feelings of sadness and despair that often accompany postnatal depression.
Additionally, exercise can improve sleep, if baby allows you to get any, boost self-esteem, and provide a sense of accomplishment—all vital factors in promoting overall well-being.
The MummaBfit Difference:
MummaBfit was born out of my own battles with mental health. I attended an exercise class when my first born was 8 weeks old, here I met my best friend who became my rock, my world and my support network. It inspired me to create MummaBfit all those 7 year ago!
Our classes are a unique twist on an exercise class. We combine exercise and feel good with community and support. Come to us to get fit and strong and end the class in a world of teas, coffees, chitchat and feel good.
